A public welfare project directed at caring for the brain health of the elderly kicked off at the Wenhua community in Luohu on July 26.
The project aims to explore a model integrating home, community, and hospital to take care of senior residents suffering from cognitive disorders.
The project started field research in Luohu in September of last year, which included screening needy residents and offering them mild intervention and treatment.
According to the project’s plan for the coming two years, the Wenhua Community will build two brain health activity rooms and organize 12 science popularization activities related to knowledge on cognitive disorders, and 144 courses and 96 livestreaming courses on brain health. It will also offer 2,000 screening services for the targeted groups, carry out 400 second-time functional evaluations for cognitive disorders, host eight activities promoting mutual assistance between families with patients with cognitive disorders, and follow up 10 such families.
At the same time, the community will build a professional volunteer team that is expected to have basic knowledge of the illness and master the screening skills.
Statistics show that around 15.07 million people aged 60 and over in China have cognitive disorders, among whom nearly 10 million have Alzheimer's disease. It is urgent to address brain health problems, and prevent and detect Alzheimer's disease at an early stage.
